Learning Disabilities and Mental Health

Introduction

Please note that this course is delivered at our own training venue in Basingstoke, Hampshire. However, should you wish to book this course dedicated to you and your colleagues, we are able to deliver it at a venue of your choice.

Aims

To provide factual based evidence, workshops and exercises, to promote interactive discussion surrounding the understanding, classification and assessment of clients with both learning disability and mental health problems. The course involves objectively looking at case studies and provision of realistic solutions, as well as developing skills to recognise mental health problems in learning disabilities through effective assessments.

Who is this course for?

Mental health local implementation teams and Learning Disability partnership boards to help them lead and oversee developments and service improvements.

Clinicians, commissioners, managers and staff in mental health, learning disability and primary care services.

Voluntary sector organisations including support worker and care co-ordinator roles. Suitable for service users & Carers.

Course Summary

  • Overview of the national policy context, highlighting what the government expects of services relating to people with mental health and learning disability issues
  • General principles of the Mental Health Act
  • Compulsory Admission to hospital or guardianship
  • How it starts - The process of being ‘sectioned’ and the effects on patients
  • During a period of detention - Treatment, leave etc
  • How it ends - Who can discharge, what appeals can be made?
  • After leaving hospital - Aftercare, supervised discharge
  • How to recognise mental health problems within learning disability assessments. Looking at the several types of classifications than can be of use during assessments to gage levels of ability, the cause of a person’s disabilities, and the range of mental distress which can be experienced
  • Linking ‘Capacity to consent.’ Determining a person’s learning disability and/or additional mental disorder that may influence his/her capacity to consent to an intervention
