Working with Physical Disabilities & Mental Health

Aims

This course is ideally suited for anyone who would benefit from a greater understanding of mental ill health when working specifically with people who have associated physical disability and/or long term physical health complaints.

The aim is to raise awareness of mental ill health within this particular client group, focusing on the different types of mental health problems, signs and symptoms, possible treatments and recovery rates.

We also look at common misconceptions surrounding Mental illness.

This foundational course will address the issues of: the impact of Mental Health diagnoses on individuals, carers and the wider social support networks. The course also looks at promoting and maintaining positive mental health.

Who is this course for?

This one day course is ideal for organisations such as, statutory/non statutory, Voluntary and private sector services, Housing and Benefit staff, Support staff within the health/social care services, Schools and businesses, Citizen Advice, Library and Advocacy staff. This course is also suitable for commercial type businesses. Service users/carers.

    • As a result of this workshop staff will:

  • Have increased their understanding of the mental health problems which people may experience
  • Be able to identify the main problems of thoughts, feelings and behaviours associated with mental health problem and physical disabilities
  • Have had the opportunity to explore communication skills when assessing people with dual/complex needs and be able to participate more effectively in the planning of care for people with mental health difficulties/chronic physical conditions and/or disability.
